I give this two stars because it is recommended for those studying for the PHR exam...but if you buy this book AND the Reed/Bogardus certification study guide, you are really wasting your money. This book is just the study guide, but shorter and more vague. They literally lift passages from one book to the next. If you aren't studying and you want a general knowledge guide...you should STILL not buy this book. Just get the certification guide instead, it has much more detail. I'm kind of annoyed that I bought both of these.

Great book for human resource professionals - I bought this book as a resource as I prepare to take the SPHR exam. It is an excellent resource, easy to read and understand.

One of the best tools for studying for a PHR SPHR exam. The material covered is also appliacble for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP.

This was an outstanding book to read and study in preparation of the SHRM-CP exam. It covers everything - all of the topics you need to know for the exam. Especially critical are the appendixes and the glossary of terms, as well as the reference guide in the very back of the book. Mostly everything in the SHRM-CP exam are in this book. Read it, highlight it, and memorize the information as you will definitely be questioned on it! Pay special attention to the somewhat obscure passages as I was surprised how much of that was in the actual exam. This book, and the 1000 question book by Olamide Asekun, as well as the "SHRM-CP Exam SECRETS Study Guide", were the three things I used to sucessfully pass the SHRM-CP exam the first time! Good Luck and study hard!

Use multiple sources to study from. I find this book helpful in defining what HR means now compared to past HR theories

For something that calls itself a guide to a profession's "body of knowledge," it doesn't seem as informative or professional as it should have been. The information in here is a bit vague. They definitely should have used an editor/proofreader.

This book is the explanation for those who do not understand that the HRCI test has historically been competency base and became even more so with the latest re-weighting of the various domains. While marketed as a guide to the HRCI BOK, with several appendices, it is also a primer on HR as a part of (rather than apart from) the business.

Let me preface this by saying, I passed on my first try for the PHR; this guide was a great comprehensive summary for studying. I used this, flashcards, and as many web based tutorials I could find. This is not a test that you can cram for the night before and pass.

About the Author
Sharon Thompson Hirschy has been an educator, social worker and advocate for families and children for 35 years. She is a college professor who teaches courses in child development and education, including Child Abuse and Neglect. Mrs. Hirschy is a former protective services caseworker, child care teacher, and administrator. She is a certified teacher and has taught in first grade and special education classrooms. Mrs. Hirschy is a Certified Family Life Educator who has authored many parenting and child care publications, including several parenting programs. She serves on the advisory board for several national, state and local boards related to children and families. She has been the Assistant Director for the University of North Texas Center for Parent Education and a leader in the development of parent educator standards in Texas. Recognition has included the 2000 Parent Educator of the Year by Practical Parent Education and the Brous Leadership Award for advocacy for early childhood by the Fort Worth Association for the Education of Young Children.

Elaine A. Wilkinson has taught in the Early Childhood and Education field for over 30 years, including Child Abuse Prevention courses. She has served on the Texas State Advisory Board for curriculum development for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the North Central Texas Workforce Commission as the sole child care representative on the board, and the Parent Network Advisory Board for the Texas A&M Co-operative Extension Branch. She was invited by the Ministers of Education as an Ambassador to Beijing, China and Budapest, Hungary to visit and observe Early Childhood classrooms in both the farming and city communities in those countries. She also serves on numerous boards advocating for the rights of young children.

Bought this book for nostalgia but after looking at the recipes... not going to happen. If you want a good selection of Lowcountry recipes then buy 'South Carolina's Historic Restaurants cookbook'. This book will give you the recipes that everyone will enjoy.

So many great recipes that I want to try. But it was more than just a cookbook to me not a relic or an antique buy an emagination but was really happy to find a somewhat vintage copy of this awesome cookbook.

Not what I thought it would be but good to have

Love this cookbook. This particular copy was a gift for a friend but I’ve had a copy for my self for 30 years or more. I grew up in the south and this is the best cookbook of southern food I’ve ever used.

Love this cookbook! It was recommended by Laurie Colwin. Miss her and her writings.
